Comments: Pretty much can get an all you can drink special whenever you want if you contact Rachel. Almost seems desperate to attract binge drinkers. Pros: Tuesday night specials are great Cons: $5 cover on weekends is insane for just a regular bar under a flash sign. |

Comments: I submited a formal complaint to The Mex company based on a recent experience as a patron at their establishment on Friday, September 4, 2009. I was sent an email-invite from The Mex on August 28, 2009 inviting me to spend my birthday celebrating there. The email was signed by a sales manager by the name of Dayna Wilde. I communicated with Ms. Wilde via email several times on Friday, September 4th as I decided to accept the invitation and invite a few friends to celebrate my birthday at their establishment which offered the late open bar happy hour from 8:00pm – 10:00pm with the $12 cover for the guests. She confirmed that Friday would be a good time to come. I started off the evening arriving at 7:50 pm with 4 guests including myself, my husband, and 2 girlfriends. Everything was good. We sat outside and had a drink and ordered food. Meanwhile, 2 other guests (my girlfriend and her fiancé) who arrived a little later around 9:00pm arrived and called me on my cell phone because the front gate security guard would not let her fiancé in due to his shorts being straight cut denim. Let me add that he is a clean cut young man who also had a polo collar shirt on. I came to the front and spoke with the security guard there and explained that it was my birthday and I invited them here. He was obviously neatly dressed and because there was no signs, nothing written online, nor was it communicated to be by Dayna that there was a specific dress code, I did not understand why he could not be admitted. The security guard understood my point and he was allowed in. Next, we walk over to The Mex and the head security guard there says he cannot let him in as well for the same reason. I also tried to talk to him but he says he could not make an exception but if his shorts were “cargo”, he could come in. That makes absolutely no sense to me. How is it more acceptable to accept a man wearing cargo shorts, where weapons could be concealed in so many different spaces due to the numerous pockets as opposed to denim shorts with the normal 2 side and 2 back pockets? This is written no where in the facility. The head security for The Mex, did however say my 2 friends could purchase the wrist bands and get drinks from the outside bar but could not come in. My friends and I who just ate dinner and were already there was told we could take our drinks outside with my friends who could not come in. Five minutes later after my girlfriend and her fiancé paid their money and ordered 1 drink, 2 other security guards approached both my husband and her fiancé and said they both had to leave because of the dress code. Although my husband was acceptable at 7:50pm and at dinner, all of a sudden at 9:15pm, his jeans became too baggy. My two friends who just paid their money and was ok to purchase drinks by one officer were now told to leave by 2 other security guards. The reason they had to leave is due to a dress code that is not written and apparently can be applied to whomever, whenever, however…hmmm? Next, I spoke with the manager of The Mex who also could not give me any sound reason why they had to leave besides saying the dress code changes after 9. He also could not tell me what the dress code was or where I could find it or who it applies to for that matter. I was only told that this was private property and they could do whatever they wanted. Well my response to that experience is this: I am lucky to have a huge role in communicating with large organizations and I plan to publicize this experience to every communication website, i.e. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace…every newstation, i.e., Fox45, WBAL11, WJZ13, WNUV54, ABC2….every local paper, i.e. The City Paper, The Baltimore Sun, The Examiner, every blog site, etc. to make sure this does not happen to another person. I plan to be proactive and do everything in my power to broadcast their discriminatory and bias company practices and I guarantee in a time of unfavorable economic conditions, they will feel the financial pain, the same way I felt the emotional personal injury on my birthday. In addition, I am also seeking legal counsel. In the future, their staff should think before they act as the consequences may be more ghastly than anticipated.
This is important and something the community should be made aware of.
